Change editor

I'm running qtoctave on Ubuntu 11.10 as an alternative to Matlab.
I would really like to use an editor other than emacs as I have never liked
emacs (please, no emacs evangelising). I've set the EDITOR variable to gedit
in my .octaverc file and qtoctave reads this OK but then tells me that this
just creates a variable called EDITOR and octave now uses a function called
edit.m. Checking through this edit.m I can find no reference to emacs except
in a comment, I don't understand where I'm supposed to edit the .m file to
make gedit the editor instead of emacs.
Does anybody know how to achieve this?
