You can build Octave in less than 1GB if you don't build with
debugging symbols. See the manual here

Just pass the following options to configure  "CFLAGS=-O CXXFLAGS=-O
LDFLAGS=" Note that there's an error on the manul, it says that those
are for make (it's for configure).
