"image(...)" is part of Octave's core.  The problem doesn't implicate the image 

The problem is a bug in gnuplot (might be in AquaTerm?)

The suggestion to use macports was to make the "qt" terminal available.  The 
"qt" terminal includes anti-aliasing like AquaTerm, but without the bug.
