Thanks for the comments Philip.  I do appreciate that memory exhaustion is
rarely straight forward. 
The odd thing here is that everything works fine with Octave 3.6.4.but files
with 3.8.0, with everything else (as much as possible) being constant. 
These are 8 it gray scale images.  Large but not excessively so. 
Could it be that the array in I'm resize is being default  cast as double or
other large size.
