works for me with ubuntu and octave 3.8.1




 

​Except that "/Symbol w" should render as "ω"...
You'd get better results with gnuplot (Doug is using fltk) and using some
cairo based terminals (e.g. "wxt" for the screen and "pdfcairo"
for the output") : print(h1, "plot12.pdf", "-pdfcairo")

(screenshot and pdf are attached, octave 3.8.2 / Fedora 20)
