[Help-tar] Multi volume tar question.

My reading of the manual says that at the prompt for multi-volume tar(tar -M or tar -ML) I am only given the option for the new volume/tapename. However, I want to specify both name and *length*. Is thispossible in any way?

My interest is to backup a large RAID array across several smaller anddissimilar spare hard drives.
