named destinations of PDF documents

Hi!

The names of "named destinations" in PDF documents generated from
Texinfo files always end with an "@" character. The responsible code
is obviously line 892 of texinfo.tex:

  \def\pdfmkdest#1{\pdfdest address@hidden xyz}
                                   ^
                                   ^

Can anyone tell me why this character is necessary or useful? Some
tests show that everything seems to work fine even without the @.
