    I'm can't seem to compile texinfo with gcc 3.0.3.  Other than gcc,
    my system is stock Mandrake 8.1.  Is this a known issue or do I have
    to start digging?

1) what version of texinfo?  
2) what is the error message?

I use gcc 3.0.3 on my development host (red hat 7.2).  I did have to
change some #ifdef's inside printf's since 3.0.3 was incompatible (sigh)
with all previous releases wrt that construct.  Aside from that, they
have been coexisting peacefully enough.

If you want to try the latest pretest (with these fixes among others),
it's at ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/texinfo.tar.gz.
