I see the problem.  (For the record, the parsing of @end was globally
changing the catcode of the end of line character.)  This sequence works
for me (the braces are the important part):

@tex
{\globaldefs=1 \frenchspacing}
@end tex

I'll see about adding @frenchspacing as a supported command.
