Indeed, even on the Texinfo level:

@macro vs {}
@address@hidden@vrule height .3ex}%
   @address@hidden width.3em}%
   @address@hidden height.3ex}%
@end tex
@end ifnottex
@end macro

By the way, I found

@macro s {}
@end tex
@end macro

as a substitute to LaTeX's \, rather useful, too.
