According to the GNU Texinfo Manual, in order to have different text
in defferent formats, one have to use the conditional commands
(@if... and @ifnot...). But conditional commands must appear on lines
by themselves.

This interferes with the rule that macros, containing a command which
must be on a line by itself, cannot be invoked in the middle of a
line. But the grade symbol is unusable if you cannot insert it in the
middle of a line. So, it looks like the grade symbol cannot be
implemented as macro.
