Thanks Gabor for your quick response. Ive been running into further
problems creating a GraphBase object (Probably because of my
inexperience using python) I use the es and vs properties of the Graph
object to add attributes to the nodes and edges of my graph so I have to
create a Graph object to start with.And I don't think its possible to
call a method on a parent class that has been overridden by a
childclass. I was wondering if there is any way to get the list of
modularity values from the VertexClustering created by the
Graph.community_fastgreedy(self, weights=None) method. I guess I could
always run the Graph.modularity(membership, weights=None) method on each
merge however this seems wasteful as these have already been calculated
in community_fastgreedy method.

according to the docs, there is nothing wrong with using the 
GraphBase version, it just does not return the same nice form as
the Graph version. Actually, the Graph version is just a wrapper 
to the GraphBase version.
