As far as I know, there isn't such a variable. There is a file called
config.h that's generated during the compilation process and it does
include a version string but I guess it is not installed with the rest
of the package.
I think such a variable or function would be a nice addition; for
instance, the Python interface could check whether it is API-compatible
with the installed igraph library or not. I will add it to our todo
list.
