It's not so much losing track of the mapping as never knowing it in the
first place.  Prior to 1.11.1p1, CVS didn't even try to figure out the
mapping for intermediate directories, it just mapped them to Emptydir. 
1.11.1p1 makes an attempt to map them which seems to match most people's
expectations, at least in the obvious cases.
