Any basic Standards to Follow when the source code needs to put u nder CVS control

Hi,
    Can you please advise me what basic standards (like using variables
inside the code instead of hard coding paths etc..) that we need to follow
while writing the code say for example JAVA code or perl code or shell
scripts so that It will be easy to maintain under CVS. The code will be used
something like Development-Stage-Production environment.
