check in error: Failed to create temp file

I'm unable to commit changes on a certain computer. I get this error
message:

cvs [commit aborted]: Failed to create temporary file: No such file or
directory

I can't find mention of this error anywhere and I can't figure out
what's causing it.

I also noticed a similar error when I try 'cvs logout':

Logging out of :pserver:address@hidden:2401/usr/local/cvsroot
cvs [logout aborted]: unable to open temp file address@hidden@ax/tmp/cvsfD6oOs:
No such file or directory

Has anyone seen this?
