Thanks. The test really failed on my Red Hat 7.3 box: expr cannot handle
multi-line matching correctly. But it was not the problem of expr, but
confirmed to be a glibc problem. After upgrading to the latest glibc for
Red Hat 7.3 all is OK. The out-of-box Red Hat 8.0 glibc seems to have this
problem too.
