CVS is a terrific versioning system - and runs on VMS and windows.  CVSNT is more popular on windows and also runs on Unix and has an audit module and supports a wider range of methodologies than traditional CVS (reserved, change sets, mergepoints etc).  You can certainly run CVSNT server on Unix or Windows and use a CVS client on VMS.  CVS and CVSNT are both "free/GPL".

 

There are many good books available on CVS, eg: "Essential CVS".

 

However a versioning engine like CVS or CVSNT must be implemented with a process that will support your organisational objectives, simply installing the software will not magically satisfy your auditor requirements.

I am looking for a viable Source Code Version Control System for the HP-Alpha/OpenVMS (v7.2) platform.  Is there a CVS combination for VMS only or Windows/VMS?  I need a reliable VC system to aid our multi-user develpment team and satisfy auditor requirements.  We expect the VMS platform to be live for about the next 3-4 years in our operation.  CVS was the first google response in my search.  Thanks for  your recommendations.
