CVS update/checkout performance

Hi,

We have a reasonably large CVS respository (3,500 files) that has seen a significant degradation in performance over the last few months.  It now takes 7 or 8 minutes to checkout the project and around the same amount of time to update.

The client is 1.12.9 on Windows 2000
The server is  1.11.21 on Solaris 8

I have a few ideas on what my be behind the slowdown but I'd appreciate your ideas as to which of these is the most likely cause.  I don't want to make changes to the repository if it isn't going to alleviate the problem.

- There are a several binary files in the repository but most of the files are plain text.
- We branched the code about 2 years ago and never went back to the head. All work is done on this 'main' branch, including new branches.

- The project is about 4 years old so there is a lot of history.
- The directory structure has been altered several times.

Cheers,
CP
