vanishing mail problem solved

My mail "vanished" ( was marked read)as soon as I entered the
group buffer and  before any messages.

I "fixed" the problem by deleting nmlmail.cache and the 
mail directories.
I had to resubscribe to the mail group.

Things are back to normal now.
ie: my mail now remains marked unread until I actually enter the 
message buffer.

Gnus is better than sliced bread but there are somedays when I wish that
it was toasted :-)
