Are you sure that you need mailcap for this? I'd suggest to use
`mm-text-html-renderer' and `browse-url-browser-function'.

Don't do that! It makes Gnus even more insecure the Outlook Express!
I'm not sure about you quotes. I would expect...
image/*; start "%s"
or
image/*; start %s
