But if you can find them, there's really no point in associating a
"type" to them.

  $ find <nnmldir> -type f -regex '^.*[0-9]+$' | \
     xargs some_app_needing_mail_files_as_input

Maybe you should say what it is exactly that you want to do with your
nnml files.
