I'm not alone. Someone else reported the same problem more than a year
and a half ago. Sadly, there were no replies at all:

With Google I found the Emacs CVS commit which at least _seems_ to have
introduced the error message in Emacs' Gnus. It's in file
lisp/gnus/nntp.el.
