One way to do this is to use boxquote.el; example:

,----[ C-h f gnus-summary-followup-with-original RET ]
| `gnus-summary-followup-with-original' is an interactive compiled Lisp function
|   -- loaded from "gnus-msg"
| (gnus-summary-followup-with-original N &optional FORCE-NEWS)
|
| Documentation:
| Compose a followup to an article and include the original article.
| The text in the region will be yanked. If the region isn't
| active, the entire article will be yanked.
|
| Invoked with:
|
| M-x gnus-summary-followup-with-original
`----

You can find boxquote.el in the package emacs-goodies-el if you are
using Debian (or a derivate).

You can also use the "verbatim marks" that slrn (I think) pioneered; but
only slrn and Gnus interpret them, as far as I know.

Use R to Reply, or F to followup (instead of r and f).
