Yes.  It's a mystery.

Even though I have filled out the .authinfo file, and gnus knows where
it is, gnus doesn't set these variables.

Can the variables usually set by checking .authinfo be set in the .emacs
file, or by customize?

Otherwise, gnus works great in Vista.
