I wanted to give you the shortest example, but adding the following to your
`.emacs' is sufficient to get the same effect:

;; highlight tabs in all modes
(add-hook 'font-lock-mode-hook
          '(lambda ()
             (font-lock-add-keywords
              nil
              '(("\t" 0 'trailing-whitespace prepend)))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Gnus looses its colors, after Emacs restart.
