Which reminds me. Is there any reason for the current default for

(defcustom gnus-ignored-newsgroups
  (mapconcat 'identity
             '("^to\\." ; not "real" groups
               "^[0-9. \t]+\\( \\|$\\)" ; all digits in name
               "^[\"][\"#'()]" ; bogus characters

And I don't even understand what it's trying to do. It won't match

but it will match the perfectly sensible

Is the regexp just totally bogus?

I think what someone may have tried to express is "unless the bogus
characters are enclosed in quotes, then remove bogus character names",
and ended up with the opposite.

Sound reasonable?
