I have the following in ~/.gnus, so apparently I had the same problem at
some point...

(setq gnus-update-message-archive-method t)
(setq gnus-message-archive-method
      `(nnfolder "archive"
                 (nnfolder-directory  ,(expand-file-name "archive" 
                 (nnfolder-active-file ,(expand-file-name "archive/active" 
                 (nnfolder-get-new-mail nil)
                 (nnfolder-inhibit-expiry t)))
