I have good experience with:

 gnus-use-dribble-file             nil
 gnus-read-newsrc-file             nil
 gnus-save-newsrc-file             nil
 gnus-startup-file                 (concat pm/emacs-dir "newsrc"))

(gnus-demon-add-handler 'gnus-group-save-newsrc   5     2)
