Have you tried giving this function an argument (say 1)?

Just a guess from reading the documentation of it:

,----[ C-h f gnus-summary-mark-as-expirable RET ]
| gnus-summary-mark-as-expirable is an interactive compiled Lisp
| function in `gnus-sum.el'.
| (gnus-summary-mark-as-expirable N)
| Mark N articles forward as expirable.
| If N is negative, mark backward instead.  The difference between N and
| the actual number of articles marked is returned.
