As you may be aware, ATI makes video cards for which it refuses to publish the specifications; as a result, free software cannot support them. (There is a project to build a free driver based on reverse engineering, and it mostly works, but there are still some mysterious details which are obstacles to getting it to work.)

On Wednesday, April 26, the "compiler architect" of ATI will speak at MIT's CSAIL Department in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. (4pm, G7 lounge.)

Richard Stallman, the President of the FSF, will be in attendance and thinks it would be useful for several of our Associate Members to be there as well to put ATI on the spot about this problem--and make sure he can't evade the issue. ATI should not be able to gain kudos for work that treats the public badly. If something shouldn't be done at all, there's nothing good about "doing it well".

If you will be in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area tomorrow, I encourage you to attend the speech. Please do let Richard know directly if you will be attending <address@hidden>.
