Half? The last analysis I saw concluded 80% *at least*, probably more.

I don't think this is actually true. My impression is that this is
rather an exception.
Most people who work on free software in their spare time either don't
have a proper job (students etc.), or don't work as programmers but
rather do something completely different for they job, or -- probably
most often -- do custom software at work.
(Custom software is usually non-public, but free for the actual user.)
