Actually we do have HDMI.
I'm using a thinkpad docking station for both of my X200, which supports
HDMI. It works without any major problems (and is cheap). The only thing
that could be slightly unpleasing is that you'd still need to use the
display of the laptop when using disc encryption because there is no
output on external displays until after entering the password in libreboot).
