I also understand that pretty much all the truly free parts of
VirtualBox have been copied from QEMU, making QEMU a very good choice.

I used QEMU to test TalkingParabola not long ago and I thought it
worked pretty well. It even has plenty of advanced features, such as
passing real hardware to the host too.

Just use one of the many available GUI frontends so you don't have to
learn all the million switches QEMU has and setting up a virtual
GNU/Linux guest becomes a cakewalk. :)
