OK after preliminaries are in, and addressing these two nits:
- `touch foo.c' is forbidden :)
- can you use `ltdl' as the subdir throughout?  It tests the fact that
  `recursive' mode works with a different name.  No need to change the
  arguments to `libtoolize', by the way (backward compatibility!)
