http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2783 it's 14th century Italian music (e.g. Landini). I found one image which may have a time signature (O2 in third staff from bottom on the right hand side): http://historyofinformation.com/images/squarcialupi_codex.jpg I agree and anyway those are ugly prints. Petrucci's Odhecaton is available on IMSLP and is much more beautiful example to follow. time signatures in manuscripts have no fixed place and size (in many cases they fit into a space), so you shouldn't worry too much.
