The reason is that the German essay is on letter paper, whereas the English  
version is on A4.  I'm not sure why slightly wider paper should cause the  
images to move into the margins, but perhaps the default margin is  
different on the two paper types.  The simplest fix is to use the a4 paper  
size, which would probably be preferred for German speakers anyway.  Anyone  
object to this?
