Well, to be fair: the patch does not need work as such.  What needs work is  
our design, but that's not really new, and not Paul's fault.  I'll try  
coming up with some working code in the next few days.  If I don't, there  
is no good reason not to put it on countdown: we can always use convert-ly  
to convert such calls to a more explicit form if it has stuck around for  
several (even unstable) releases.
