The problem is that such definitions should only hold for a "session" (one file on the command line) and the chosen interface creates permanent effects not restricted to the module of a session. And the actual code in scheme-text-spanner is much more invasive regarding the internal data structures anyway: it does not just add stuff, but sorts definitions and so on, making it much harder to undo the effects reliably.
