Attached a little more verbose suggestion. The method I suggested on Rietveld is more elaborated.
Though, some of it is a hack or at least bad coding. It's a proof of concept, nothing more
Also it includes a possibility to print
(𝅘𝅥 =𝅘𝅥 ) etc
But it's a really bad interface, I can't recommend to put it in.
Probably better to give \tempo additional (optional) arguments if possible. Or to go for a completely different method.

make metronomeMarkFormatter more flexible

This adds the context properties tempoEquationText, tempoBetweenText and
tempoShowParentheses as shown in

It also allows to scale the size of the notes in a metronome mark
independently from or rather relatively to the text and numbers.
I added this possibility because
suggests smaller note sizes; so there seems to be a need for that.

The default values are chosen so that the whole thing is backwards
compatible; to achieve this, tempoShowParentheses accepts not only
boolean values but also the symbol 'if-text.

I chose the name tempoShowParentheses instead of tempoHideParentheses
because this property also allows parenthesizing text-less

Contains regtests.
