Hi,

it is an old thread but I experienced the same problems and had a look into it.
Lilypond 1.5.6x is working fine on mandrake 7.2, 8.1 and 8.2. The only thing
not working on 7.2 is building documentation. mandrake 7.2 has gs 5.50. I
found that the offending command is the gs call in scripts/lilypond-book.py.
If I remove the options
 -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4
the documentation builds. But I do not know, what these options are needed for.
Perhaps a check during configure could help to keep using gs 5.50 with
scripts/lilypond-book.py.
