Did you download the ec-fonts-mftraced package (see the Downloads page)?
It's a clear bug that this dependency isn't mentioned in the INSTALL.txt
file of the 2.3.x series.

However, I hope you realize that the 2.3.x series is under heavy
development and should not be considered stable. For any serious
typesetting work, I recommend the stable 2.2.x version.

I have built lilypond (GNU LilyPond) 2.3.3.hwn1 from CVS (the build
works so fine, yummi!)

   I get a warning there after convert-ly >

warning: kpathsea can not find TFM file: `ecrm6'

However it comes out nice in .ps

I wanted to test out the technique, specifying smaller notehead font, thinner beams and lesser distance between beams - and then (of course?)
there are more missing fonts. ecrm6, ecbx8, ecbx10, ecbx12 and some more
for a converted Chopin Mazurka op.30.1 (Mutopia source).

Is this something worth mentioning and doing something about?

The .profile and setup has been run,
