FWIW, I enthusiastically second this motion, particularly with regards to
ending a hairpin at the end of a note.  Perhaps something like

c1\< | c\!!
(without any \...{foo} )

could produce something like
c1\< | <c1 {s2... s32\>}>

This would greatly simply editing (and simply reading!) Lilypond scores.

+1 !!!! (I enthusiastically vote for this also) Any efficient notation will do. Sounds like a scheme solution should work. I'm too busy with non-musical projects at the moment but if it doesn't get done I will attempt it.
