Are there any packages needed that are not available for your distribution?
Maybe we should find out and list the most convenient installation commands
for each distribution, like I did for Debian at
http://lilypond.org/web/devel/packaging.html
It should really not have to be more than a apt-get, yum,
what-have-you command or two.

Ah, that's better than the compile failures you saw before.

It should probably be one of those, the -devel package. The package
is called gtk+, but different distributions use different, often
unpredictable names.

Ah, but that's because you build from CVS. You're supposed to know
to look at Documentation/topdocs/INSTALL.texi ;-)
