I've just checked - the 2.9.9 manual (I was using 2.9.7) and it's still
wrong.

Looking at the pdf ... section 9, p195 (page 205 as per acrobat). Second
para, http ref on the penultimate line, says 2.8 and the tooltip giving
the link also says 2.8

The 2.9 manual on the web points at the 2.9 program reference.  I
assume you're talking about the link from this page:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.9/Documentation/
