I am just stupid. Please forget this sentence.

However, I still do think we need an integer rather than a number in
this function...

As for \octaveCheck: since Graham is planning to rename a bunch of
predefined commands soon, maybe it would be sensible to rename this
one at the same time (even though it's not a predef).
