Why should'n work just commenting out the line in the code which
issues the error when it finds a BOM?

Some things are a mystery for a non-programmer and they always be.  I
used to program simple compilers and I remember that breaking on an
error was a decision of mine, but I always could have NOT to have
taken that decision and just resume the parsing.
