Dudes! This is way simpler than we thought.
The docs should be:

For VIM, a ‘vimrc’ is supplied, along with syntax coloring tools.
A Vim mode for entering music and running LilyPond is contained in
the source archive in $VIM directory. To use our vim mode, create
(or modify) your $HOME/.vimrc to contain:
@example
set runtimepath+=/usr/local/share/lilypond/current/vim/
@end example
@noindent
If LilyPond was not installed in /usr/local, change the path
appropriately as discussed in
@rlearning{that node that has the lilypond install dir info}.
