ok, then the next step is to hit up google.  I see a bunch of
reports about problems on 64-bit linux, and one report of it being
fixed in debian by including an upstream patch.

So it could be fixed by either using a newer version of curl (one
which has that patch integrated), or applying the patch to the
existing version of curl (which may or may not work).  First step
is to find out if there's a newer version of curl out yet.
