Mike,

I really appreciate it that you let my probably sometimes excessive
sense of project aesthetics influence the direction your large creative
energy is taking.

I'll try taking a look later and see whether I can think of some things
that might be of more than cosmetic nature.  So far, the improvements on
your original approach have not been algorithmical: they are still doing
the same operations, just with less overhead.  Of course, if that adds
just 5% to the overall runtime, the motivation to look for algorithmic
improvements is not as pressing as it seemed before.
